What fishing licenses do I need?
For any trip within Virginia, clients need to have a valid state freshwater fishing license and trout license.
What time of year is best for fly fishing?
Fishing at Cool Water Ranch is available year round. Every season has its perks, but there is always good fishing to be had. Dry fly fishing is best from the spring through the early fall, when insect hatches are abundant. Nymph fishing is productive year round.
What equipment do I need?
If you only bring one rod, the best all around rod is a 9 foot 5wt or 6wt. 7-8 foot 2wt or 3wt rods can get the job done and will make even brook trout feel like monsters when they’re hooked.
What about waders?
All of Cool Water Ranch is wadeable or fishable from the bank, depending on the surrounding foliage. Waders are suggested year-round, as water temperatures stay cold, although wet wading is an option in the summertime.
What clothes should I bring?
Having multiple layers of clothing with you is important. Bring rain gear no matter what the weather report forecasts. Also, having a fleece or other type of jacket never hurts. When storms hit, it gets cold fast, even in the summer. We also recommend hats and sun gloves for UV protection during long days on the water. Polarized sunglasses help you see more fish and reduce eye strain. Meanwhile, a good fly fishing vest or sling pack is a must to carry your tackle, water, and other supplies.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Before booking a rod at Cool Water Ranch, reading and signing an indemnity release waiver is required.
Can I bring my dog (or other pet) with me?
Unfortunately, due to insurance requirements and the presence of livestock at the ranch, we are unable to host pets. The only exception is for registered service animals.
Is it possible to hire a guide?
Yes, full-service guiding is available for a fee. Please contact us for rates and availability.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations or rescheduling are available until two weeks prior to the reservation.
